The Leeds Burial Ground, known locally as Burmantofts Cemetery and officially as Beckett Street Cemetery, is probably the oldest municipal cemetery in existence in this country. Opened by an Act of Parliament in 1845, it covers 16 acres of green space in a densely-populated urban area, and contains 180,000 burials in 27,000 graves. The Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery came together in 1984 to prevent its threatened clearance, and has successfully campaigned on several issues. See the get in touch page for details of how to join or help the friends |
